A great blend of big bands and Detroit local acts, the Magic Bag in Ferndale is a great place to catch a rock show. As aforementioned, the venue focuses mainly on the genres of folk rock, blues, and indy rock. Many venues have an extremely narrow approach on how to view a show. The Magic Bag has tables lining the sides of the stage for those who prefer to relax and a pit area for those who like to be right up in the action. For those looking for entertainment in unique fashion, the Magic Bag also has “view and brew” on Wednesdays and Thursdays where they show a first run movie for an extremely low price.
Whether it is a classic film and fresh popcorn or the hottest psychedelic folk pop outfit straight outta new york, the Magic Bag perfectly compliments the Detroit underground scene which has spread to Ferndale. Able to seat about 300, the venue is small enough to be considered an intimate setting, but not so cramped that you will be smoked out within minutes. Oh yeah, there’s also no smoking which will anger some and come as a relief to others. Although they’ll usually let you back in if you decide to blacken your lungs a bit during a show.
The Magic Bag does a great job of straddling the line between semi-mainstream and straight up underground so that no matter how hardcore into the obscure scene you are, the Magic Bag will have an event just for you. Show your superior taste in movies as well as music all at once in a centralized metro Detroit venue.
